Natural Fruit Sugars VS Sugar

Sugar has become a buzzword for unhealthy lately, leading to a rise in sugar-free and natural sugar food products and snacks. Children’s drinks have especially changed over the years.  Many are now being classed as “no added sugar”. However, these contain many artificial sweeteners and although low in sugar, they cannot be classed as a more healthy alternative. 

Why Natural Fruit sugar as a healthy snack?

Enter natural fruit sugars. As we know fruit is a much more healthy snack as compared to your much-loved chocolate bars, biscuits, and cakes. This isn’t to say that all fruit sugars are equally as healthy. Bananas, for example, contain high amounts of naturally occurring sugars. In spite of this, they can be enjoyed regularly as part of a healthy diet. 

 

Eating foods high in natural and not processed sugars are a much more healthy way to get a sugar and energy boost. Natural fruit sugars are monosaccharides, or fructose sugars whereas table sugar is a disaccharide also known as sucrose. Most fruits have the same type of sugar however they vary wildly in the sugar content. 

The fruits with high water content such as watermelons, strawberries and grapefruit tend to have low sugar content. Strawberries, for example, have only 4 grams of sugar per 3 ounces serving. 

 

Many dried fruits can contain high natural sugar content. The vitamins in the fruit help contribute to a healthy diet. They can also be used in preventative health care. Natural sugars from fruit and the associated vitamins can help prevent heart attack, stroke, diabetes and other serious conditions. Making snacks with these natural fruits a better choice in your diet.
